Henrikh Mkhitaryan followed the footsteps of his father, Hamlet when he joined the Pyunik FC in 1995. In 2006, he became a pro when he was promoted to the first team of Pyunik. During his tenure with the team, they won the Armenian Premium League four times and Armenian Supercup in 2007 and 2009.
He landed a spot as a midfielder for Metalurh Donetsk in 2009. During his first season with the team, Mkhirtaryan finished with 14 goals in 38 appearances. The following season, he was hailed as the youngest captain for the team at the age of 21.
